Columbia University, Intro to Architecture Studio, Madeline Schwartzman. An immobilize project that asked students to explore basswood, structure and conceptual ideas about the hand. Students were given a sectional site and asked to use the DNA of the hand model for an inhabitable wall: a structure that can both block and allow passage.
The first conceptualization was to restrict the hand while taking note of the function. Due to the wide spread interactions with touch screens, I focused on the pinch zoom that would often contort my thumb and ring finger, turning them into points on a screen. The rest of the fingers would be held my tension.
The wall would bisect the vertical space of the assigned landscape while providing a corridor underneath. Depending on which viewpoint is taken, there would either be a soft side and a hard side.
Depending on the approach, the wall is either welcoming or offensive. From the Soft Side, different material are able to be viewed through the openings. The Harsh Side hides the interior while at the same time assaults the viewer.
